The retail banking industry is facing new competitive challenges as digitalisation sweeps through the industry, with innovation often driven by customers. New entrants from the telecom industry and the fintech business are challenging incumbent banks. With new ecosystems, the idea of going-it-alone is no longer working: collaboration is the way forward.
Retail Banking Council Africa focuses on the real challenges. Banks know their most valuable customers, but fragmented data prevents a true 360-degree view. Digital activity is tracked, but branch and call-centre interactions remain inconsistently recorded. Automated follow-up is improving, yet human follow-up on issues and leads is still unreliable.
Big themes recently include mobilising retail deposits, delivering for the 'missing middle' in the SME area, bank-fintech partnerships, digital opportunities, and hybrid banking models. The Council is industry-led and members guide us on the big topics of the day.
