A Pan-African non-bank mobile money platform open to any carrier: MTN and Orange create Mowali
Mowali stands for Mobile Wallet Interoperability. Mowali is a pan-African mobile money platform open to any carrier launched in 2019. Mowali makes it possible to send money between mobile money accounts issued by any mobile money provider in real time and at little or no cost. Mowali could have applications beyond mobile payments, including credit reporting, insurance, and lending. Mowali is a joint venture (JV) between two of the biggest mobile network operators (MNOs) in Africa and the Middle East: MTN and Orange S.A. Mowali benefits from the reach of MTN Mobile Money and Orange Money by immediately connecting as many as 100 million mobile money accounts and mobile money operations in two dozen African countries.
